Which is right for your Melbourne home?

Hybrid and laminate are the two most popular flooring choices in Melbourne homes right now. Both are attractive, durable, and significantly more affordable than timber. But they're not the same product, and understanding the difference could prevent a costly mistake — particularly in wet-prone areas.

What is laminate flooring?

Laminate is a layered product with a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core, a photographic timber or stone visual layer, and a protective wear layer on top. It has been popular in Australian homes since the 1990s, and quality has improved dramatically. Modern laminate looks convincingly like real timber, takes heavy foot traffic well, and is generally the more affordable of the two options.

What is hybrid flooring?

Hybrid flooring — sometimes called rigid core or stone-plastic composite (SPC) — is a newer product combining the best features of laminate and traditional vinyl plank. It has a waterproof rigid core, a realistic timber or stone visual layer, and a wear layer that resists scuffs and scratches. Hybrid is stiffer and more dimensionally stable than laminate, with slightly better sound-dampening in most products.

Head-to-head: the real differences

Water resistance This is the most practically important difference. Hybrid flooring is genuinely waterproof — you can install it in bathrooms, laundries, and below-ground-level rooms. Laminate is water-resistant for everyday spills and cleaning, but if water sits on the joints for an extended period, the HDF core can swell and the floor may need replacement. For kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries, hybrid is the safer call. For dry living areas and bedrooms, laminate performs just as well.

Cost Laminate is generally $5–$10/m² less expensive in supply cost than equivalent hybrid ranges. For a budget-conscious renovation covering a large area, this can be meaningful. That said, prices vary by brand and range — an entry-level hybrid can cost less than a premium laminate. At your in-home quote, we'll show you current pricing across both categories.

Feel underfoot Most customers find the two feel quite similar once installed with quality underlay. Hybrid tends to feel slightly firmer and less "hollow" than laminate because its rigid core eliminates the subtle flex some people notice when walking on a floating laminate over a slightly uneven slab. Both products benefit from a good foam or rubber underlay for comfort and acoustic dampening.

Durability Both are tough. Quality laminate rated AC4 or AC5 handles pets, kids, and furniture-dragging well. Hybrid's wear layer is similarly scratch-resistant. Neither product is indestructible — dragging metal furniture without felt pads will mark either floor — but both outlast carpet significantly in practical wear resistance.

Which should you choose?

Choose hybrid if: - You're installing in or near a wet area (kitchen, bathroom, laundry, below-grade) - You have pets or young children in a home where liquid accidents are a real possibility - You want one consistent floor running through wet and dry areas without visible transition strips

Choose laminate if: - Your rooms are dry (bedrooms, living areas, dining rooms) - Budget is a priority and you're covering a large area - You want a slightly wider range of aesthetics at the mid-market price point
